The Rebirth
Chapter FIVE

I felt my mouth drop and my hands tremble when I saw her. I could feel her happiness as well which was weird because I was at the total opposite side of her emotions. I knew my face looked contorted in a grimace but I still couldn’t rein my feelings in. I looked at her flawless face for a moment feeling an irritation creep up on me, I realized that there were some unanswered questions between us and I wanted them answered at that exact moment. Her mouth was still spread in a perfect smile and her eyes were still in a shade of pure gold. Her face was so bright that I nearly didn’t recognize her. It was obvious that she was happy to see me, but this fact just made me annoyed all the more. She had kidnapped me and now she just thought I would forgive her? I felt weird. Scared, happy and annoyed all at the same time.

She examined my face then and I guess what she saw, she didn’t like. She stood up suddenly, and I didn’t have a chance to move, when she was abruptly at my side. I looked at her irked and aggravated. I didn’t know why I suddenly felt so comfortable around her. I didn’t know her and judging by what she could do in the forest, I didn’t know what she could do either. She could have easily killed me where I stood, yet I didn’t feel the slightest threatened by her.

“You still haven’t remembered.” She said, not as a question.
“Remembered what?!” I growled at her, shocked by the aggression in my tone.

Somehow, this made her smile. She started chuckling at me and this only left me wondering. One moment she was angry and the next she was hysterical. This woman was definitely hard to figure out. I looked at her angrily for a moment and clenched and unclenched my fists where they were at my sides. She kept laughing for a minute more and finally decided that the humor had faded. I stared at her confused for a second, then irritated again. I didn’t know where the source of the huge irritation and aggression was coming from.

“You’re Cale!” She exclaimed happily at me.
“No. I’m Sam.”
“See, you don’t understand, you’re not a farm boy─”
“That’s enough.” Another voice bellowed from behind me.
When I turned around, I realized that the old man, was standing behind me, his arms crossed over his chest. He was short. Shorter than me by at least one foot. He had white hair that reached the floor and long curling nails. The sight was kind of repulsive to me, but the woman didn’t seem to care. The old man came forward a little bit and extended one arm for me to shake.

“I understand that this is how you greet others in your planet?” He said lifting his arm up higher to reach mine.
“Yes it is.” I said not lifting my own hand for him to shake.
“Well then, greetings to you Cale.” He said lowering his arm.
“My name isn’t Cale! It’s Sam.” I said stern though I could feel the irritation wash away from my body.
“There are things you and I must discuss alone Cale.

I didn’t say anything more. This old man was definitely frustrating to talk to. He looked me up and down for a second and then headed out the door. I watched as his little robed body fled away. His footsteps were amazingly heavy for someone of his size. Behind me, the woman groaned and pushed me angrily towards the door signaling me to follow. I didn’t want to, but then again I didn’t have a choice. When I exited the doors of the strange dining hall, I was shocked to see that the old man was much farther ahead than I had expected. He moved fast for a man of his stature and I soon was breathing heavily just trying to keep up. The woman was also following behind me, her long smooth steps making it easy for her to keep up. We walked a far distance, and sometimes I was sure we were going in circles, but then a new hallway─ one I had never seen, would appear and take us in what seemed like more circles. There were many twists and turns as well. We walked for what seemed like hours to me, but I was sure it was only minutes.

Finally we reached our destination. We had entered a bright square room with tall ceilings that seemed to reach the sky. Both the left and the right walls had glass strips with some sort of bubbling liquid behind them. The south wall, the one we had entered from, only contained one small red door. And the north wall was the wall that left me speechless. Up ahead, there was a magnificent glowing triangle. The triangle reached all the way to the top of the room and there was a strange gold light that emanated from it. The light brightened the tall room, making large shadows behind us.

The old man and woman stood in front of me now and both of them didn’t seem to be phased by the beauty of the structure before us. They looked at me at the same time and gestured me forward. I hesitantly advance and found myself beside the two of them. The old man went first. He disappeared into the glowing triangle without hesitation. The woman was suddenly behind me, her hands grasping the back of my neck. When she did this, I felt the soft silk of her robe touch my skin. This was the only time I realized that she was dressed. She wore a long white silk robe that touched the floor, her sleeves up to her fingertips. With her hands grasping the back of my neck, she shoved me forward.

I moved forward into the blinding light and found myself in a different room. This room was a tall rectangle and all the walls were made out of glass. My eyes bulged out of their sockets and my jaw reached the floor when I realized that I was in outer space. This glass chamber looked out into the outside, and right now, the outside was deep space. I had the breath knocked out of me. I had never imagined myself as an astronaut, but here I am in a spaceship headed nowhere in particular.

I gazed out the four glass walls into my new fate. The universe outside was one thing that I never dreamed I would ever see. The void of darkness that was the sky was breathtaking in its own way. I found myself speechless and unable to move. There was nothing in this room, nothing but us and the four walls that looked like they were about to crack. I was suddenly afraid that the glass beneath me would break under my weight. I tried to move cautiously, trying to be as light as possible. The old man and woman looked at me puzzled for a moment and then continued to look away. They both abruptly sat on the floor in one graceful movement. I didn’t quite know how they did this. The reason for such grace eluded me. They motioned for me to sit before them and I carefully obliged. They both sat beside each other facing me. Out of the blue, I was suddenly nervous. I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore. Something seemed to tell me that whatever they wanted to communicate to me now was extremely important and life changing. I glanced at the woman fleetingly, and then turned my gaze on the strange old man beside her. He seemed pleased by something, something I didn’t understand. The woman was also quite pleased by some fact that only they could comprehend.

“Cale, I want to set something straight.” The old man started.
“What is it?” I asked unable to contain my curiosity.
“But first, I must introduce myself. I am Vaughn. You may call me master or Master Vaughn if you wish. And this is Jiana.” He said gesturing to the woman on his left.
“And I’m Sam. Pleased to make your─”
“Augh! Why are you so stubborn?! You’re Cale!” The woman whose name I now knew was Jiana exclaimed.
“I’m sorry, but it’s a little hard to get used to!” I said fiercely at her.
She just answered me with a gruff sigh and a shake of her head, shaking the long blond hair dragging on the floor.
“Yes. I know it is hard to get used to, but you are not what you seem to believe you are.” The old man exclaimed, shooting Jiana a sharp look.
“What am I then?!” I asked in a brusque tone.
“I am getting to that part if you would only let me finish. You are not a boy from the farm on earth. You are not a human called Sam either. You are Caleb Dowe, son of Adan and Carine Dowe. And you are their successor.”

I felt my mouth drop open at this. My parents, Carter and Josephine, were not my parents? I had to think about this hard and the more I did, I realized was true. Me and my “Parents” had nothing in common and we had totally different hair color. They were silly and I was serious. But then again I didn’t know what to believe.

“And another thing, Jiana and I, along with three other people are your guardians. We are here to protect you. You are in serious danger.”
